Juneteenth celebrations happening in the Midlands

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Anyone looking to celebrate Juneteenth and learn about the history behind the day, can celebrate with events around the Midlands.

According to the National Park Service, Juneteenth is the one of the oldest known commemorations related to the abolition of slavery in the United States.

The day was signed into law as a national holiday on June 17, 2021.

  1. The 8th annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival kicks off this Saturday, June 15, at the Dutch Square Mall. From 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. anyone can enjoy live music, food, activities for the kids, a job fair and much more. It’s all free to attend.
  2. The African American Historical Society of Irmo is hosting a Juneteenth celebration on Wednesday, June 19, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Irmo Community Park. There is free admission and free parking.
  3. 2024 South Carolina Juneteenth Freedom Fest Night Parade is being held on Friday, June 14, in downtown Columbia, at 6:30 p.m.
  4. Columbia Museum of Art is offering free admission on June 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can enjoy exhibitions like Sergio Hudson: Focused on the Fit and enjoy a tour of Black art.
  5. A Juneteenth Entrepreneur, Film and Television Extravaganza will be held in the main Street district on June 18, and June 19.
  6. EdVenture Children’s Museum is hosting a Juneteenth Celebration: Inclusivity for Everyone. Anyone of all ages can enjoy an educational day that focuses on the history of Juneteenth.
