Abused cat found with face covered in glue on road to recovery
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — A cat believed to be subjected to torture will likely make a near full recovery.
Manuela Schafer runs a nonprofit called “For The Love of Street Dogs.” She says her friend tagged her in a post on Facebook about a mistreated cat.
“Scrolling through the comments, what I was seeing was like nobody wanted to touch that cat. Nobody wanted to get out there and help that cat. So…. I can’t look away from that,” she says.
Found near the Spring Lake Apartments on Garners Ferry Road, the cat, whom Schafer has affectionately named Emmie, had her eyes, nose, and mouth glued shut.
“This was a trusting animal that came to a person probably for loving. Okay? And she was just…tortured,” says Schafer.
Executive Director for the Humane Society of SC, Dawn Wilkinson, says Emmie was not a feral cat, and was most likely left behind by a former renter.
The organization is investigating the case and will have the suspect criminally charged should they be located.
“We suspect foul play in this situation because the cat, upon intake into CVETS, it was noted that the cat was shaved on its head and part of its body, and the whiskers were cut on the cat,” says Wilkinson.
Schafer’s nonprofit is now handling the cost of Emmie’s treatment at CVETS in Columbia as caretakers have provided Emmie with a feeding tube and are slowly removing the substance with warm compresses.
“However the substance did cause a thermal burn to her skin, and we do not know what the condition of her skin will be after CVETS gets the substance off,” says Wilkinson.
Schafer says Emmie has a lot of healing left to do, and may lose one of her eyes from the incident. Once recovered, she’ll be placed in a medical foster home.
