Scientists study amped up sharks after they consume discarded cocaine
(CNN) — It’s his “natural musk. Stings the nostrils. This is not a ‘b’ or ‘c’ movie like cocaine bear. Remember that? Well, in the waters near Rio de Janeiro as we know there are many drug transactions. And typically when drug dealers are being chased they throw their drug of choice overboard. In this case it’s cocaine. So, now i ask you, have you ever been afraid of sharks? Well, be even more afraid my friend because some of them are on cocaine.
Scientists were studying what kind of chemicals were in the waters, and found that many sharks were ingesting the narcotic making them all geared up and raring to go. Mainly because cocaine targets the brain, and causes hyperactive and erratic behaviour.
Of the 13 sharpnose sharks, all had cocaine in their liver and muscles. Researchers say long term effects include impairing their vision so they can’t hunt normally – and reducing their life expectancy.
