Your Voice, Your Vote: Sen. Mike Fanning faces challenger Everett Stubbs in District 17
CHESTER, SC (WOLO) — According to the latest census data, each South Carolina state senator represents around 110,000 residents.
On Election Day, all 46 state senate seats will be up for grabs.
Many incumbents face close races, including here in several Midlands districts.
One of those is Senate District 17, represented by Democrat Mike Fanning.
Fanning won by 1,600 votes in 2020 in the district which includes Winnsboro and Chester.
We spoke to Senator Fanning and his competitor, Republican Everett Stubbs, about why they believe they are the best man to serve the district.Â
Fanning has served the district since 2017 and applauds recent economic growth in the city of Chester.
Over in Winnsboro, Fanning points to the Teacher Village as a recent success. The senator adds that education is one of his top priorities and says he has fought for teacher pay raises at the statehouse every session.
His opponent, Republican Everett Stubbs. also supports improving education, but unlike Fanning, he believes that having school choice is the way to do that.
As a lawyer, Stubbs wants to see judicial reform at the statehouse but says his top priority is economic development in District 17.
Stubbs is also a strong advocate for the 1st and 2nd Amendments and believes he is the better candidate to lead the area forward.
