Gov. McMaster signs bill banning cell phones in SC prisons

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Cell phones in prison have been against the rules but now they are against the law.

On Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 22, Governor Henry McMaster signed a bill named after former Corrections Officer, Robert Johnson.

Johnson was shot in his home back in 2010 by an ex-inmate at the Lee Correctional Institute.

The new law bans not only cell phones but other electronic devices such as pagers or laptops.
