RICHBURG, SC (WOLO) — Incumbent Sen. Mike Fanning of District 17 conceded to his Republican opponent Everett Stubbs following hearings over the close race.

Sen. Fanning made the announcement on his Facebook page, saying “the Election Returns were confirmed… and we found out that we have lost the election to continue to serve as your Senator. I have called Everett Stubbs and congratulated him on winning… and becoming the new Senator for Chester, Fairfield, Lancaster, & York counties (Senate District 17).”

After election night, Stubbs was leading by just 32 votes.

Last Friday, four counties that make up the district conducted hearings to decide how many provisional ballots will be included in the final count.

A provisional ballot is given out if there is a question surrounding a voter’s registration status or if they do not show up to the precinct with an ID.

Sen. Fanning served the district since he assumed office on November 14, 2016.
