Argument leaves one person dead in fire, another stabbed in Newberry County

NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WOLO) — According to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, a structure fire and fatality have occurred in the Silverstreet area.

Newberry County Sheriff’s Deputies, members of the Newberry County Fire Service, SLED, and the Newberry County Coroner’s Office got to the scene around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Newberry County 911 received a call at 2:03 p.m. that a structure was on fire on Green Acres Road in Silverstreet.

Shortly after, 911 received a call from the homeowner stating that he had been stabbed, and the person that assaulted him set his house on fire.

Newberry County EMS transported the stab victim with a non-life threatening stab wound to a local hospital.

Fire units from Silverstreet, Chappells, Friendly and Newberry Rescue Squad responded and extinguished the blaze.

A search of the structure found a deceased victim inside.

The Newberry County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Ricardo Dewalt, 31.

The preliminary investigation by the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office revealed the property owner and another individual engaged in an argument, which resulted in the property owner being stabbed.

The assailant then retreated into the structure and a fire started.

Because a fatality occurred with a fire, a SLED Arson Team has been called in to assist.
