NASCAR’s Josh Berry and Josh Harris test their endurance at Fort Jackson
FT. JACKSON, SC (WOLO) — Two well-known figures in NASCAR sped around a track of a different kind Thursday morning at Ft. Jackson.
NASCAR Cup Series Driver Josh Berry and Darlington Raceway President Josh Harris took on one of many obstacle courses at the Army installation — all of which are meant to test a recruits’ physical and mental abilities, and assess their strength, endurance, and problem solving skills.
“It was fun. Obviously we got a really small piece of the course here but it was definitely tough,” says Berry.
“Man, I’m tired. We just did a really short portion of this obstacle course and it gives you such an appreciation for what these trainees are going through,” says Harris.
They also attended one of Ft. Jackson’s many graduation ceremonies — there to celebrate with the troops’ family members as nearly 800 men and women are set to become active duty Army soldiers.
“Coming here and watching these brave men and women that’ve chosen to serve their country, and seeing them put all this effort in, just makes you feel really fortunate for what we get to do on Sundays,” says Berry.
“NASCAR is a sport that’s built on honoring the traditions of our country and celebrating them. And today just gives me and Josh as well a greater appreciation for that and everything that they do,” says Harris.
Darlington Raceway is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, with their official “Throwback Weekend” happening April 5th and 6th — including The Goodyear 400 that Sunday.
“We are trying to go through and tell the story and history of this great racetrack. And throughout race weekend, throwback weekend will be celebrating that history by having a lot of former competitors at the track doing fan engagement. We’re gonna be telling that story through different opportunities, we’ve got coming up, we’ll be doing an unveiling of the NASCAR Hall of Fame soon, and really it’ll be a celebration that we continue all throughout the year,” says Harris.
