UPDATE: Fort Jackson identifies trainee found dead

FORT JACKSON, SC (WOLO) — A basic combat training soldier was found dead during training on Thursday, April 24th, according to the Fort Jackson Garrison Public Affairs Office.
The soldier who was identified as Pvt. Gabriel J. Perez was from the Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment.
The 22-year-old was from Anchorage, Alaska.
“Losing a teammate affects us all,” says Fort Jackson Commander, Maj. Gen. Daryl Hood. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their family as well as the cadre and fellow Trainees,” he says.
The unit is conducting a 48-hour training stand down. Fort Jackson is providing resources to the family and members of the unit as they grieve and process the loss.
The Army Casualty Assistance Office next of kin notification process is complete.
“We extend our condolences during this difficult time to all who knew Pvt. Perez. All available resources are being provided to his family and teammates, and we encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for help,” says Fort Jackson Commander, Maj. Gen. Daryl O. Hood.
In accordance with Army regulation, an investigation is being conducted.
