Governor Henry McMaster was in the Lowcountry Thursday as he met with state and local emergency management official and held a media briefing to discuss South Carolina’s preparations for the upcoming 2025 hurricane season.

The briefing took place at 11:00 a.m. at the Charleston Emergency Operations Center, located at 8500 Palmetto Commerce Parkway in North Charleston.

The briefing was meant to outline the state’s readiness and response strategies as the hurricane season approaches.

Ron Morales, the Warning Coordinator Meteorologist with the National Weather Service Charleston Office, said national data from last year’s hurricane season included 18 named storms and 11 hurricanes.

These numbers are both “above normal,” Morales noted.

The official tropical outlook from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration comes out on May 22 while June marks the start of the 2025 hurricane season.
