Suspect & K9 injured in officer-involved shooting in Calhoun Thursday
UPDATE: Calhoun Co. Sheriff Thomas Summers says K9 Angus is home and doing well and should be back to his old self in a couple of weeks.
CALHOUN, CO., S.C. (WOLO) – Calhoun County deputies say a suspect and their K9 officer were injured in an officer-involved shooting Thursday night.
According to investigators, around 11:23 p.m., deputies responded to a residence on Church Camp Road in Cameron to a report of a man coming to the home saying someone was trying to kill him and who was covered in mud.
Deputies say they were aware of a single vehicle crash near the home.
When a deputy saw a man lying near the road and tried to make contact with him, authorities say Jermaine Eric Halmon, 45, of Orangeburg, presented a pistol and fired on the deputy who was still exiting his vehicle.
According to authorities, they deployed a K9 unit to find Halmon who fled on foot, and said Halmon shot K9 Angus multiple times.
This caused deputies to return fire, striking Halmon.
He was taken to a hospital to receive treatment and will be facing charges of attempted murder as well as injuring a police dog.
Deputies say K9 Angus was transported to a Columbia area veterinary hospital and is currently in stable condition.
SLED is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
