Officials give updates on fire truck involved in fatal crash, lightning induced home fires
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Authorities are providing updates to a crash on Saturday night involving a Columbia-Richland fire truck and a car that left one person dead and four firefighters injured.
According to Chief Aubrey Jenkins with the Columbia-Richland Fire Department, the crash took place on Two Notch Road near Decker Boulevard around 7 p.m.
The fire truck was heading to a home on Bradford Ridge Lane, after lightning set it on fire.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol reports that the fire truck had its lights and sirens on at the time of the accident.
The passenger of the sedan died at the scene. The four firefighters who were injured have been released from the hospital.
The Richland Coroner’s Office has not yet released the name of the person who died and the accident remains under investigation by the SC Highway Patrol.
The fire caused by lightning has left seven people unhoused, but no injuries were reported. One of three homes were affected by the fire, with one reported as a total loss.
