SCSO: 3 arrested after 2 vehicle chases in Sumter County

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Sumter County investigators say three people have been arrested after two vehicle chases in the county.

At about 9:30 a.m. on July 18, a Sumter County Sheriff’s deputy attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle near South Guignard Drive and U.S. 15 South after seeing non-operable brake lights and a cracked windshield.

Despite the deputy’s emergency equipment being fully activated, the driver refused to stop and attempted to flee, say deputies.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop near Lois Lane and Alexander Place.

A passenger exited the vehicle carrying what appeared to be an AR-style rifle and fled on foot.

The driver, later identified as Elijah Ross, was detained at the scene.

Additional deputies responded and established a perimeter.

During the search, a deputy saw the fleeing person get into another vehicle, which then left the area at a high rate of speed.

Deputies pursued the second vehicle and attempted another traffic stop.

The driver of the second vehicle failed to stop until reaching a home on Hudson Street.

SCSO says the passenger who had fled from the earlier stop exited the vehicle and ran again.

Deputies located the person identified as Quantez Jenkins at a home on Hudson Street and placed him under arrest.

The rifle was recovered and found to be loaded and illegally modified to fire automatically, says SCSO.

The driver of the second vehicle who was identified as Dyteira Kanye Carter was also arrested at the scene.

Ross and Carter were each charged with failure to stop for a blue light.

Jenkins was charged with unlawful possession of a machine gun and possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent felony.

All three taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.

Jenkins was released after posting a $50,000 bond.

Ross was released after posting a $30,000 bond.

Carter was released after posting a $50,000 bond.
