Sumter man arrested for assaulting woman with baseball bat, shooting her
SUMTER, SC (WOLO) — A Sumter man was arrested and charged with attempted murder Saturday night after allegedly assaulting a woman with a baseball bat and shooting her
during a dispute.
Deputies with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a home on Old Pocalla Road around 11 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, a deputy found the victim lying severely injured in the yard. The victim told authorities she had been beaten and shot by Willie James Sigler, who was still inside the residence.
A Sumter police officer arrived shortly after and assisted with rendering aid to the victim. Deputies and police officers say they secured the scene and surrounded the home. Despite repeated commands by deputies, officers say Sigler refused to come to the door. As preparations were being made to make entry, a family member arrived and persuaded Sigler to surrender.
Sigler was taken into custody without incident and charged with attempted murder. He was transported to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.
The victim was taken to a local hospital, where she was listed in serious but stable condition. Investigators believe the incident stemmed from a personal dispute between Sigler and the victim. The case remains under investigation.
