Residents can return to homes after hazmat incident at Crystal Clean in Cayce

 

 

Cayce Hazmat incident CAYCE, S.C. (WOLO) – The City of Cayce Fire Department and other agencies were managing an active hazardous materials situation at Crystal Clean, 627 Poplar Street this morning.

According to investigators, potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide were accidentally mixed with cooking oil, which caused chemical off-gassing and a tanker became warm to the touch.

Several homes in the immediate area were evacuated due to the incident. And all residents within a ¼-mile radius were directed to evacuate as a precaution. City of Cayce police and fire assisted and directed the evacuations.

Residents near Poplar Street were given the okay to return to their homes.

Lexington School District Two says in an abundance of caution, Brookland-Cayce High School was on a temporary hold response protocol, meaning the school day is continuing on a normal schedule, but students and staff are remaining inside the building. Around 1 p.m., the temporary hold on the school was lifted. School officials say normal school day operations will resume. And all after-school activities, and programs this afternoon will go on as scheduled. Brookland-Cayce students who had remained at the Lexington Two Innovation Center for a time after their morning classes also were able to return to the Brookland-Cayce campus.
