City of Orangeburg passes hate intimidation ordinance

Orangeburg, SC (WOLO)–The City of Orangeburg is the most recent South Carolina community to pass a hate crime ordinance.

Tuesday night the city council voted in favor of a hate intimidation ordinance.
Based on the ordinance, it is now unlawful for anyone to cause fear or harm based on race, religion, sexual orientation, and other protected classes.

Mayor Michael C. Butler says, “Passing the Hate Intimidation Ordinance is a major step in ensuring that every resident of Orangeburg feels safe, respected, and valued in our community. Our city stands firmly against acts of hate and intimidation, and this ordinance reinforces that commitment.”

Penalties for violating the ordinance include a five of up to $500, 30 days in jail, or both.
