Alvin S. Glenn Guard arrested for using chemical irritant on inmates

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WOLO) — The Richland County Sheriff’s Department says 52-year-old Latasha McClendon, a guard at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, has been arrrested for using excessive force on two inmates.

On October 26,  around 9 p.m., Officer McClendon was involved in a verbal dispute with an inmate in a cell. According to RCSD, Officer McClendon utilized a chemical irritant by spraying it into the cell before closing the flap door with two inmates inside.

RCSD investigators reviewed evidence and determined the use of force was excessive. McClendon was arrested and charged with two counts of Assault and Battery 3rd Degree and Misconduct in Office.

She was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center where she is awaiting a bond hearing. Deputies with Richland County say they were notified about the incident on November 6th.
