Arrest Made in Fatal Westwood Avenue Shooting
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Investigators with the Columbia Police Department have charged a man in connection with an isolated fatal shooting that occurred shortly before midnight on January 2nd.
According to Chief Skip Holbrook, Michael Hampton II is charged with Murder, Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime, Possession of a Weapon by Convicted Violent Felon, Burglary –
First Degree, Kidnapping, and Assault and Battery – First Degree.
Officers say they were dispatched to the 200 block of Westwood Avenue for a shooting, and when they arrived found an unresponsive man with a gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead by EMS at the scene.
Investigators later determined that the suspect had broken into homes minutes before the shooting.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office is assisting CPD and will identify the victim once the next of kin has been notified.
Hampton is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
