RCSD: Homicide on I-20 East under investigation, victim identified

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – Richland County deputies say they’re investigating a homicide on I-20 East this morning.

According to investigators, it happened around I-20E between Alpine Road (Exit 76) and Clemson Road (Exit 80) on Monday, Feb. 23.

SCDOT reported a vehicle fire at Mile Marker 79 at 2:13 a.m.

The roadway which was temporarily shutdown has since been cleared.

Just after 2 a.m., RCSD was notified that the South Carolina Highway Patrol had responded to a single vehicle collision on I-20 eastbound and requested RCSD’s assistance after discovering evidence that the victim may have been shot.

Upon arrival to the scene, deputies confirmed one deceased person.

Deputies say this is an isolated incident; investigators do not believe there was a public safety threat.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of the victim, who was identified as James W. Smith III, 32, of Bishopville.

This incident remains under investigation as deputies work to determine where the shooting occurred and what circumstances led to the shooting.
