Richland County deputies recognize good samaritan who prevented scam

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Richland County deputies took time to recognize a woman who prevented an elderly woman from being scammed.

Sheriff Leon Lott says on February 11, a scammer convinced the elderly victim that they were a lawyer representing her son and that she needed to deposit $5,000 in bond money into the green machine, which processes money orders, at Food Lion on Fairfield Road.

At that point, Sheriff Lott says Amanda Greenlaw, an assistant manager at the store stopped the woman from making the deposit and urged her to call law enforcement.

Greenlaw was awarded with a certificate of appreciation from the sheriff.

If you or someone you know was the victim of a similar scam, call the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
