RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A 23-year-old has been arrested following an accidental shooting that injured a young child, said RCSD.
On Monday, March 23, 2026, around 7:30 p.m., deputies responded to an apartment complex in the 8700 block of Windsor Lake Boulevard in reference to a single gunshot victim.
Once deputies arrived to the scene, they found a young child under the age of 7 with a single gunshot wound to the lower body.
The child was taken by EMS to a local hospital for treatment.
At this time, the child is in stable condition, according to Richland Co. Sheriff’s Dept.
Further investigation revealed that the child was unsupervised when they gained access to Hayley Johnston’s unsecured firearm.
Investigators said the firearm was being stored in a closet that also contained children’s snacks.
The child was injured as the result of an accidental discharge.
Two other children were present in the home and were not injured.
RCSD investigators notified the SC Department of Social Services.
Johnston is charged with three counts of unlawful conduct toward a child.
