“I choose to include” — 1,500 students attend Unified Rally for Special Olympics SC

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Tuesday’s “Unified Rally for Special Olympics South Carolina” at the State House brought out over 1,500 students from 32 different schools.

A number of student athletes with intellectual disabilities shared their experiences from the podium, with the event celebrating how a small act of kindness, respect, and acceptance can change a student’s entire day — and life.

“Being in unified sports and our fan club has given me confidence has given me confidence to do things I never thought I could do. I am braver and stronger,” says local student Joseph.

Each student ended their speech with a simple phrase, “On this day, I choose to include!”

Barry Coats, President of Special Olympics South Carolina, says the group helps students with special needs make friends that will last a lifetime.

“We’re teaching our General Ed kids what it is to give back, and what it is to take care of, if you want to put it that way, a population that so desperately needs it, and just loves people. They love the interaction. They love the friendships, and it’s contagious in our school,” he says.

General Ed students spoke from the podium as well, reminding everyone to choose kindness.

“Kindness matters more than we think. Small acts of kindness such as giving a compliment, helping someone with their work or even holding the door for them can have a big impact on someone,” says local student Mason.

“Choosing kindness can change someone’s day or even their entire life,” says local student Kennedy.

Leaders say the unified rally’s focus on inclusion and acceptance lead to increased student engagement and improved relationships throughout local schools.
