Traffic stop leads to discovery of drugs, stolen gun

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C.(WOLO)– A Wednesday afternoon traffic stop led to an arrest and the seizure of illegal drugs and the recovery of a stolen handgun, says Sumter Co. deputies.

A Sumter County Sheriff’s Office patrol unit performed a traffic stop at South Harvin Street and Newberry Avenue on Weds, April 29, 2026, after seeing a dark window tint on a vehicle.

When the deputy approached the person’s car, they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Deputies performed a probable cause search of the vehicle and discovered several containers of illegal drugs and a handgun that was confirmed as stolen.

The driver of the vehicle who was identified as Devonte Daquan Tyre Ford was arrested and charged with multiple charges.

Devonte Daquan Tyre Ford charges:
• Trafficking in methamphetamine or cocaine base, 200 grams or more but less than 400 grams; 2nd or sub. offense
• Trafficking in heroin 4 grams or more but less than 14 grams, 2nd or subsequent offense
• Possession of a controlled substance
• Felon in possession of a firearm
• Possession of a weapon during a violent crime
• Possession of a stolen handgun

The approximate value of the drugs seized is nearly $5,000, says SCSO.

Ford was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, where he currently awaits a bond hearing.
