Driftwood Grill releases statement on customer killed by umbrella Saturday

CLARENDON CO., S.C. (WOLO) – Driftwood Grill at Lake Marion has released a statement following reports of an incident where a customer was killed by an umbrella during Saturday’s severe weather.

In a Facebook post Sunday, the company posted the following statement:

Our hearts are with the family, friends, and loved ones affected by the tragic incident during last night’s sudden severe weather event at Lake Marion.
This has deeply affected many people in our community, including guests, staff, first responders, and everyone involved. Out of respect for the family and those impacted, we ask for continued prayers, compassion, and privacy during this incredibly difficult time.
We are grateful for the emergency personnel and community members who responded and assisted during the situation.
Please continue to keep everyone affected in your thoughts and prayers.

According to the Clarendon County Coroner’s Office, around 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, they responded to Driftwood Grill on Lake Marion.

The coroner says the woman, identified as Dana Winger of Huger, died after a strong wind blew an umbrella from a table which hit the woman causing a laceration to her head and neck.

The coroner says Winger died at the scene.

Officials say Winger was dining with her husband when the incident happened.
