Gamecocks WSOC picks up 2-1 road win

The Gamecocks (4-1-0) picked up a win on the road over Wyoming (2-2-0) on Thursday to kick off their trip out West, netting a 2-1 victory over the Cowgirls. The game marked the first-ever matchup between the two programs, and the first goals as Gamecocks for sophomore Ava Tutas and fifth-year Emilie Castagna.

HOW IT HAPPENED

South Carolina got things started early, with rookie Dempsey McMahon getting a shot off just two minutes in that was on target, but met by a block from a Cowgirl defender.
Wyoming answered with one of their own in the 12th minute, coming off wide left.
Over the next 15 minutes, the Gamecocks and Cowgirls battled for possession, each giving their side another chance but coming off short.
In the 33rd minute, a handball call inside the box on Wyoming set the Gamecocks up for a penalty kick. Ava Tutas stepped up to the spot and drained her shot into the back of the net for her first career goal to put South Carolina up 1-0.
Just 10 minutes later, Emilie Castagna set up a corner for South Carolina, ultimately scoring olimpico-style after curving her shot into the upper-left corner past Cowgirl keeper Haley Bartel. It was the 10th goal of Castagna’s career but her first as a Gamecock.
Wyoming cut the lead in half for South Carolina early in the second half, taking advantage of an empty net in the 56th minute to make things 2-1
The Gamecock backline locked in for the remainder of the game, keeping the Cowgirls at bay to come out on top
Castagna’s goal marked the fourth to come off a corner for the Gamecocks in the last two games, with three goals resulting from corners in their 4-0 win against Furman
South Carolina took seven corners to the Cowgirls’ two. The Gamecocks are now averaging 6.4 corners a game
