Benedict coach, athletic director laid to rest

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– A beloved coach and athletic director was laid to rest today.

Willie Washington’s memorial service was held at First Nazareth Baptist Church on September 9, 2026, in Columbia.

Washington began his career at Benedict as the men’s basketball coach in 1988, and was ultimately named athletic director ten years later.

During his tenure the Tigers won 50 SIAC championships across 12 sports.

Benedict announced Washington died last Monday, August 31, 2026.

He was 79 years old.
