New SC State Museum exhibit highlights South Carolina’s role in remembering lives lost on 9/11
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — When you walk inside the SC State Museum, look to the right and you will see its newest exhibit — “South Carolina Remembers 9/11: Years Later” — created by Curator of History Laura Cothran.
The exhibit, on display through April, includes artifacts from Ground Zero and tells the story of how students at White Knoll Middle School raised enough money to replace a fire truck destroyed in the attacks.
As ABC Columbia’s Kelly Coakley reports, the exhibit also contains audio interviews with some of those students reflecting on how 9/11 changed their lives.
Cothran is hosting a special curator talk from 12:30–1:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, at the SC State Museum. During the free event, she will explore the objects featured in the exhibition.
