5 arrested after 5-year-old girl pronounced dead at hospital

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Newberry Police say five people have been arrested after a 5-year-old girl was pronounced dead at hospital last month.

On Thursday, August 6, 2026, officers with the Newberry Police Department responded to Newberry Health in reference to an unresponsive 5-year-old girl.

Officers say the investigation indicates that severe neglect contributed to the child’s death, who was pronounced dead at the hospital.

In connection to the case, multiple people are being charged.

Tekeyia Monayaria Sligh, 31, is being charged with homicide by child abuse.

Ebony Miranda Davis, 45, is being charged with aiding or abetting homicide by child abuse.

Mantrevis Sligh, 20, is being charged with aiding or abetting homicide by child abuse.

Jamarion Sligh, 19, is being charged with aiding or abetting homicide by child abuse.

Isis Nyasha Gary, 29, also from Newberry, was charged with aiding or abetting homicide by child abuse on September 8, 2026.

The case continues to be an active, ongoing joint investigation by the Newberry City Police Department, SLED’s Special Victims Unit – Department of Child Fatalities, Newberry County Coroner’s Office, Eighth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office, and the Newberry County Department of Social Services.
