Firefighters hold 27th annual Fire Prevention Parade and Block Party
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — On Wednesday, students and community members were treated to the Columbia-Richland Fire Department’s annual “Fire Prevention Parade and Block Party.”
Firefighters say the event is a way to get important fire safety information out to both kids and community members — especially in time for colder weather.
“You know every year we see something different from participants and from kids, and it just means a lot to the fire department and it means a lot to the community. And fire prevention, make no mistake, is one of the single most important non-emergency events in the fire department, and what a way to celebrate,” says Fire Marshal George Adams.
The parade began at W.A. Perry Middle School before making its way by Carver Lyon Elementary and C.A. Johnson High schools.
Students in the Bucket Brigade took part in the parade as well — led by their music teacher, Rebekkah Candillo.
“It’s for the kids. My goal for my students is for them to have as much experience as possible, and playing, doing whatever I need to do to spark the love of music and excitement into them is why I do what I do,” says Candillo.
When it comes to fire prevention tips, firefighters say remember to have a working smoke alarm in every room of your home and always pay attention when cooking, which remains one of the leading causes of home fires.
Chief Aubrey Jenkins says fire prevention is even more crucial with colder weather on its way.
“We’re getting into winter months, so that means people are gonna be using space heaters. Make sure you have those devices at least three feet away from anything that can burn, because it can go up so quick,” says Jenkins.
The parade ended at the Drew Wellness Center where community members headed inside for food, games, and prizes.
Fire Prevention Week runs through October 10th.
