LAKE MURRAY, S.C. (WOLO) — Memorial Day officially marks the beginning of summer, but for revelers on Lake Murray, their holiday partying means more arrests and citations for local authorities. A dozen and a half BUI (Boating Under the Influence) arrests is what they authorities normally see for an entire year. However, lake revelers have already accounted for more than half that, at 14, and the hottest months aren’t even here yet. Authorities say the most important things to remember are that boating and drinking never mix, and life jackets are a must. They also warn, make sure the life preserver fits. Underestimating age and weight restrictions, especially for children, can be deadly. Next to the State Department of Natural Resources, Lexington County Marine Patrol, is the only full time lake watchdogs department, monitoring some 52,000 acres of water. They, along with EMS and firefighters, are hoping lake lovers heed their warnings, so the summer can be a safe one for everyone.
