EPA to treat 2 tainted properties in Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) — Federal environmental officials are helping to clean two properties in Anderson where hazardous chemicals have been found.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reports that a coordinator for the Environmental Protection Agency likened one of properties to a chemical lab. That’s where officials found containers filled with acids and gases.

They say they believe someone was trying to make organic diesel fuel there.

Nearby, another mess was discovered. Officials say there are unsecured chemicals including vats of acid at the former American Screw and Rivet Corp. The plant closed in November.

Officials say the proximity of chemicals to Lake Hartwell and Interstate 85 is a concern.
