Legislature overrides school spending vetoes

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina Legislature has overridden education-related vetoes, opting to send $56 million to public schools in the form of per-student spending.

The decision came as the House’s voted 97-8 Wednesday to override a veto that had been issued by Gov. Nikki Haley. The House vote was followed hours later by a 32-7 vote in the Senate.

Haley argued legislators shouldn’t spend an unexpected increase in state revenues on schools.

The Legislature also overrode Haley’s veto of $12.4 million to replace old school buses.
