Rare monkeys take up residence at Greenville Zoo

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — The Greenville Zoo has some new guests — a pair of rare African forest monkeys.

The Greenville News reports (http://grnol.co/LCzamKhe ) the animals are Schmidt’s spot nosed guenons (gweh NINs)

The two are Stewie, a 4-year-old from the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, Fla., and 15-year-old Zoe from Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo.

Zoo director Jeff Bulluck says the pair is part of a breeding program to conserve endangered species.

The monkeys can store food such as fruits, seeds and leaves in their cheeks which can hold nearly as much as their stomachs.
