Senators Want Carolina Stadium Field Named After Tanner
“Has a great ring to it.,” says Senator Joel Lourie. Senator Lourie is talking about Ray Tanner field at Carolina Stadium. It’s an idea from several state Senators including Lourie and Senator John Courson. “We think it would be an appropriate way to thank Ray Tanner for what he has done for my University and for the state and for those young men that play for him,” says Senator Courson. “Coach Ray Tanner is such an incredible guy, not only is he a great ambassador for our University, but a great ambassador for the state of South Carolina,” says Senator Lourie Right now the name change is just merely an idea, but it has two ways of being approved. One, the USC Board of Trustees could adopt the resolution for the name change, or, the General Assembly could adopt their own resolution, which would not take place until the regular session in January. Senators Introduced the idea on Wednesday and Senator Lourie hopes it will soon become a reality. “I would hope that in the very near future we could make this happen and continue to capitalize on everything that’s happened with Carolina baseball and all the excitement around it,” says Senator Lourie. The idea comes on the heels of Coach Ray Tanner leading the Carolina baseball team to back to back national titles. Here’s what he has to say about the idea of having the field named after him. “I’m just very fortunate, I’m just a country boy and I’m ecstatic to be up here with these guys and part of a great University and play in a beautiful stadium and that’s enough,” says Coach Tanner. But Senator Lourie says Coach Tanner deserves it. “He’s very humble, hie’s very honorable. I just think this would be such an appropriate way to recognize him for everything he’s done for the University and the State of South Carolina and I hope it will happen fairly soon,” says Senator Lourie.
