Dense smoke and fog blankets coastal NC

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Drivers are being warned of dangerous conditions on roads in Wilmington, Whiteville and other areas as heavy fog and smoke from area wildfires blanket the area.

Some flights at Wilmington International Airport were delayed early Friday because of the air quality conditions.

Forest service officials say smoke from a 30,000 acre wildfire in Pender County is drifting south as wind direction changed beginning Thursday.

Smoke that combines with fog creates a very thick condition known as super fog.

The super fog stretched from Pender County into New Hanover County and as far away as Tabor City and even Myrtle Beach, S.C., early Friday.

Children and adults with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or heart disease should avoid exposure to the smoky air.
