SC State nursing students to retake course, test

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — The state Board of Nursing is allowing some upper-level nursing students at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg to retake a pharmacology course and tests to move ahead in the program.

Last month, the university announced it was closing its generic Bachelor of Science in Nursing program because first-time pass rates on a national test to license registered nurses was well below state and national levels.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported Thursday (bit.ly/N2xA5m) that university officials told the board that unclear standards had existed and grades required for advancement had changed several times. They presented a plan to allow some students to retake coursework and exams to continue in the program.

Board President Samuel McNutt says he wants to ensure students who advance meet high nursing standards.
