Free watermelon slices at SC Farmers Market

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina State Farmers Market is celebrating Watermelon Day with free slices of the summertime fruit.

The South Carolina Watermelon Association says around 10,000 acres of watermelons are planted in the state every year and are worth $40 million if it is a bumper crop.

South Carolina Watermelon Queen Holly Whatley will be at the farmers market starting at 11 a.m. Saturday to give away free watermelon slices as long as they last.

State Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers says plenty of other South Carolina fruits and vegetables are also in season, including peaches, cantaloupes and sweet corn.
