USC welcomes Fulbright scholars from 42 nations

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The University of South Carolina is playing host to 42 students from more than two dozen nations studying in the United States through the Fulbright scholarship program.

University spokeswoman Megan Sexton says the students are in Columbia this week for a series of events designed to orient them into campus life in the United States.

They are visiting the South Carolina Statehouse, USC’s historic horseshoe, learning about Southern cuisine, dancing and gospel music. Sexton says the program is one of 10 being hosted around the country.

The Fulbright program is sponsored by the U.S. government to foster exchanges between students and scholars around the world. It was set up by Congress in 1946 under legislation introduced by then-Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas.
