Former Iranian legislator talks on nuclear actions

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A former Iranian legislator is scheduled to participate in a panel discussion on Iran’s nuclear activities at the University of South Carolina.
Fatemah Haghighatjoo is slated to appear Wednesday evening in Gambrell Hall. She resigned in protest from Parliament in 2004 when more than 2,500 candidates were banned in advance of national elections.
Also appearing are faculty members from USC’s political science, law and Jewish studies departments. The discussion will be moderated by Robert Cox, director of the Walker Institute for International Studies.
The Islamic Republic denies it is seeking atomic weapons. However, the U.S. and other nations express concerns that Tehran limits access to international inspections, is expanding its nuclear fuel labs and enriching uranium far beyond what’s needed for its single energy reactor.
