SC school leader asks students to return to class

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — The superintendent of Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5 is telling students who haven’t gone to class this school year that they should return to their studies. And she’s doing it face-to-face or at least talking with their parents.

WIS-TV reported (bit.ly/SaSuAT) that Cynthia Wilson spent Saturday knocking on the doors of high school students who haven’t attended class.

The “Reach Out for Dropouts” is a program she started two years ago. Forty volunteers broke up into teams looking for 35 absent students. Two of those students are in middle school.

School officials said six students re-enrolled and will be back in school Monday.

The school district’s dropout rate is 2.5 percent, slightly lower than the state’s average of 3 percent.
