Son of Baptist Convention president shot in SC

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say the son of the president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention was found shot to death in Charleston.

Charleston County Chief Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal says Brian Eliot Holmes of North Charleston died of a single gunshot wound. His body was found about 3 a.m. Monday in a car in a low-income neighborhood.

Holmes was the son of Sonny Homes, pastor of Northwoods Baptist Church in North Charleston. The elder Holmes is serving a one-year term as president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention. The convention’s Web site says about 1,800 churches statewide are members.

Police said they found the younger Holmes after receiving a call about a traffic accident. They are investigating and have not said why he may have been in the neighborhood.
