Tips for Staying Safe this Season
Lexington County, S.C. (WOLO) — The holiday season is typically known for being the happiest time of year. however law enforcement officers say it’s a time to be wary.
“People just need things during this time of year, so they maybe more apt to make a run at something in an illegal way to get something, to get some cash quickly,” explains Captain Adam Myrick with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Myrick the sheriff ramps up patrolling in Lexington County at the beginning of November, with their crime suppression team.
Cpt. Myrick tells ABC Columbia, “They are proactively preventing as much crime as they can, they are heavily patrolling those areas that we know are sometimes susceptible to armed robberies particularly this time of year.”
Even with the increased efforts the Sheriff’s department is asking residents to remain vigilant amidst the hustle and bustle of the holidays.
“What we share with people is really common sense, but the key this time of year is really to make it common practice,” says Myrick.
He says it’s particularly important to be alert when you’re walking to your car suggesting you put your phone away and have your keys out and ready.
“As you walk through that dark parking lot make sure you walk with purpose and make sure that you make eye contact with as many people as you can because that makes it clear to the bad guys you’re not going to be a good target.”
Along with locking car doors and closing the windows, Myrick recommends removing valuables and presents out of plain sight.
“Cell phones, GPS, tablets, and type of kids toys those need to go inside with you or be left at home. The bad guys will look around those parking lots and often times it’s going to prove too tempting for them.”
