Spartanburg mom gets bond in breast-feeding death
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A Spartanburg mother charged with homicide by child abuse after investigators say she killed her child by passing a lethal dose of morphine through her breast milk has been released from jail on bond.
The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports that a judge ordered 37-year-old Stephanie Greene to stay in home detention after she was let out of jail Wednesday on the $100,000 bond.
Greene’s 6-week old daughter was found dead in November. Prosecutors say the infant died from an overdose of morphine and another prescription drug. They say Greene was seeing at least two doctors to obtain the painkillers.
Greene’s attorney said she should be released because she was taking medicine prescribed to her by a doctor who should have known she was breast feeding.
