South Carolina Art Museum Reopening in May
The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston's historic district will reopen in May following a $13 million renovation project of almost two years
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston’s historic district will reopen in May following a $13 million renovation project of almost two years.
The work began in the fall of 2014 and the Gibbes said in a news release last week that it plans to reopen on the Saturday of upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
The renovated museum will have 30 percent more gallery space and will be able to display twice as many works from its permanent collection. The renovation of the first floor includes classrooms, artist studios, lecture and event spaces as well as a cafe and a museum store.
Two exhibits being staged with the reopening focus on contemporary art in the South and on “Porgy and Bess,” the opera about Charleston that is being presented at this year’s Spoleto Festival USA.
