COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “We’re just trying to eliminate things that could’ve happened to them,” says Chief Keith Lewis, Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office. It’s been more than a week since anyone has seen Jake Ziegler and Ray Pierce of Catawba County. The two left for Myrtle Beach just before 2:00 a.m. Saturday, October 13th. “It just looks like two young men that decided to make a trip and we just don’t know what happened,” says Lewis. Monday, Fairfield County Sheriff’s Deputiees went back out into the woods just off Interstate 77 to search for the teens. “We are actually putting boots on the ground so to speak,” says Lewis. Lewis says the last ping from either cell phone came just 1.7 miles south of a cell phone tower near Exit 48. “We’re talking about two young men with two phones, both of them went dead apparently at the same time or stopped being used or was turned off,” says Lewis. Authorities also say neither of the teens debit cards have been used. Crandall Sims reporting, “Just off Interstate 77 at Exit 48 is the staging area for the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies meet here and then head out in teams to search both the North and South boundlanes of Interstate 77.” Authorities say they do not suspect foul play and while they say there is no evidence the two wrecked along this stretch of roadway, they don’t want to leave any rock unturned. “We just want to make sure that all the area is checked and checked real good,” says Lewis. Monday’s search comes just one day after volunteers searched by foot and family members pleaded for help. But as Monday afternoon rolled around the volunteers were gone and authorities were back out. Yet, still there is no sign of Jake Ziegler and Ray Pierce.
