SC court denies rehearing in James Island case

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina’s highest court says it won’t reconsider its decision nixing efforts to incorporate the James Island community just west of Charleston.

The state Supreme Court on Friday rejected a petition to re-hear the issue.

The community has tried to incorporate three times in the past, and each time the courts threw out the effort after challenges from the neighboring city of Charleston. Last month, the court rejected James Island’s third incorporation attempt, ruling that some areas of the town were not properly connected with others.

James Island Mayor Bill Woosley has said that, if the high court didn’t reconsider its decision, he expected another incorporation effort within months. On Monday, Charleston officials are set to ask a state court to appoint a receiver to disperse James Island’s assets.
