COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Former District 8 candidate, Republican Michael Letts and County Council Members are now moving to file for an investigation by the Richland County Solicitor’s office because they say, this election is merely a fraud. “We have a tainted election, folks,” says Letts. Following a week of bad press for the Richland County Election Commission, Republican Michael Letts, who ran unsuccessfully against Jim Manning for District 8, called for a new election. “The only way to restore the integrity back to the process is to allow those who were disenfranchised, to have the opportunity to participate,” says Letts. Letts went on to launch rather serious questions against the Richland County Election Commission. “People have been disenfranchised, as of last Tuesday, because of a deliberate act to not place enough voting machines,” says Letts. While highly citing social media, Letts later said, in Monday’s press conference, he was not accusing. “We are directly questioning all who have an involvement in this and all who have a tie in the money trail,” says Letts. At the heart of the argument is the penny sales tax vote that passed. However, Letts says it’s not about the race outcome. Also, speaking out today, Val Hutchinson who represents District 9. She too says she stood in line for hours on Election Day. “Somewhere between the 3rd and 4th hour, the sense that something was terribly wrong set it, that there was more than just disorganization, it felt intentional,” says Hutchinson. ABC Columbia News contacted Election Commission Chairperson Liz Crum, for her opinion on the conspiracy theory. However, our calls were not returned. Today’s press conference is of course not the end to this saga that’s lasted nearly a week now. Tomorrow, the County Election Commission along with both the Democrat and Republican parties will appear in court for a hearing. That is also when we will learn if the recount, that was started Friday, on all county elections will be allowed to resume.
