Jury selection begins in Lee Correctional riot trial
LEE COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Jury selection in the trial of one of the inmates involved in a deadly 2018 Midlands prison riot began on Monday, Dec.4.
Officials with the Department of Corrections say Michael Smith was indicted in November for his actions in connection with the riot.
He is charged with assault and battery by mob 1st degree, possession of a weapon and criminal conspiracy.
In April of 2018, officials say seven inmates at Lee County Correctional Institute were killed in a riot that officials say started after illegal cell phones were brought into the prison.
In total 20 people were arrested and more than 100 pounds of contraband was seized following the riot.
