Watch: Leaphart Bridge Reopened After Being Struck
Lexington Co. S.C. (WOLO) — Leaphart Bridge is now reopened after a tractor trailer towing a piece of equipment struck the bridge, showering debris onto I-26.
Engineers with the South Carolina Department of Transportation spent Wednesday afternoon assessing damage to the bridge which they say was already classified as ‘structurally deficient’ and set to be replaced.
With the reopening of the bridge engineers are asking drivers to abide by the new weight restrictions limiting traffic to passenger vehicles only.
Before hitting Leaphart Bridge, the engineers say the truck also hit Rainbow Road Bridge, which sustained no significant damage.
Trooper David Jones with the South Carolina Highway Patrol says the driver of the tractor trailer is facing charges for not abiding by height requirements.
