Birdwatchers set for Santee Christmas season count

SUMMERTON, S.C. (AP) — Birdwatchers are set for the Santee Christmas Bird Count at the Santee National Wildlife Refuge visitor center near Summerton.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports (http://bit.ly/UbyZXM ) that the event is being held from dawn to dusk on Saturday.

Participants identify and record birds seen and heard within a designated count area. Participants cover the area by foot, and in vehicles. They observe several wetland and open water areas, treed areas, thickets, and open fields.

Backyard birdwatchers are also invited to participate. The count is taking place across the Americas from Dec. 14 through Jan. 5. In its 113th season, it is the longest-running citizen-science survey in the world. Those interested in participating may contact compiler Dennis Forsythe at dennis.forsythe(at)gmail.com.
